Despite the extensive work, laundry was her favorite task. She liked watching the water brown as the cloth brightened. She liked standing in the fresh air as the laundry fluttered in the breeze. And it was nice to have some time alone in the bedrooms, which never—
“Janice! What are you doing?”
Terrified, Janice dropped the sheet onto the bed.
Miss Staghorn stomped into the room. “Disgusting! Take it back and wash it again. I won’t sleep on something that’s had your filthy nose wiped all over it!”
Janice apologized, swiftly gathered the sheets, and hurried out.
“Five days in the closet!” Despite expecting such a punishment, Janice nearly winced as the call echoed down the stairs. There would be little joy in this laundering, knowing what awaited her when the work was done.
