One more thought!

Many colors don't exist in nature precisely, but we can see them anyway. Evolution is a scattershot process. It doesn't only develop EXACTLY what we need to survive. It often goes way overboard. So I wouldn't say evolution "led" specifically to an ability to detect non-nature smells any more than it targeted the ability to see chrome or taste and feel Pop Rocks.
